What is Crawl Budget?

Crawl budget is called crawl budget in Turkish. It is defined as the crawling budget allocated to websites by Google bots. For this reason, it is used to reduce scanning costs and shorten scanning times.

Each site has an individual crawling budget, and their budgets are completely different. Crawl budget varies depending on the technical compatibility, number of contents and authority of the sites. Accordingly, low crawling budgets also reduce the value of the sites at the same rate.

How to Calculate Crawl Budget?

Before calculating the crawling budget, rates are determined based on the average number of pages to be crawled per day for the indexed page. Results are obtained by dividing the number of pages by the number of pages scanned daily and according to the crawling budgets of the sites. If the site's crawling budget is over 10, action must be taken to optimize the crawling budget.

If the crawl budget is 3 or below 3, the level of the websites is quite good. Accordingly, it can be continued without the need to take action. It will always be useful to keep track of the average number of pages crawled daily for sites whose website crawling budget is between 10 and 3. If the average number of scanned pages is low, it is extremely important to take action without delay.

When Google bots visit a website, they first go to the robots.txt file. After accessing the file, the links are clicked. Style files and scripts on the scanned pages become operational. It gets indexed from links and important topics according to the amount of the crawling budget.

How is Crawl Budget Determined?

Crawl budget is generally determined by considering 4 different factors. According to this;

1. Total Number of Pages Added to the Index: When Google bots visit sites, they check the indexed pages and site map on the site. When new links are found as a result of the check, these pages are scanned and classified. It is extremely important to constantly add original content to the website and remove poor quality content from the sites.

2. Website Size: Google bots scan all JavaScript, images, HTML files and CSS files. Large files reduce the value of the site. For this reason, Google bots allocate high resources and time because large files are scanned later and take longer than normal. It may cause less frequent visits by bots if large files are not removed from the website on subsequent visits. This reduces the crawling budget of the website.

3. Website speed: Site opening speed is the most efficient feature for users. This makes it efficient for both users and Google bots to crawl the website faster. This ensures that it takes less time and fewer resources, which results in it being higher in Google rankings as a reward.

4. Number of Backlinks: If the links to the website are noticed by Google bots, the bots follow the links. Referencing your site from different sites increases the value of the site equally. This has a significant positive impact on scanning budgets.

How to Optimize Website Crawl Budget?

There are different methods that can be applied to improve website crawling budgets. Increasing the crawling budgets of the website contributes greatly to the site's ranking at the top of search engines. The steps to be taken to increase screening budgets are as follows:

• Improvements should be made to increase the speed of the website.

• Low quality content needs to be removed from the website to prevent it from being added to directories. Low quality content reduces the number of bot visits.

• Improvements should be made, including the smallest details in the architecture of the website, and unnecessary codes should be deleted.

• All pages that are not linked on the website should be placed in appropriate sections on the site.

• If there are pages on the website that give a 404 error code, these pages need to be edited.
